*J. EDGAR (ACTIVE 1885) VIEW OF DUMFRIES signed inscribed and dated l.r.: J. Edgar/Dumfs/1885
oil on canvas 97 cm by 150 cm; 38 in by 58 1/2 in framed This impressive panorama of the town of Dumfries is a historically important record by a local artist of his home town. While the identity of this artist is unclear, the Edgar family has been prominent in Scotland, especially in Dumfriesshire, for hundreds of years. Robert Edgar (c. 1669-1759) wrote An Introduction to the History of Dumfries. Modern Dumfries retains many of the buildings shown here, including the Old and New Bridges, and the handsome red sandstone Sheriff's Court with its striking green copper roof. Quite apart from the artistic and aesthetic merit of this painting, it is also a fascinating study of the changing face of a town over time.
