  • An 18th century pietre dura panel inset casket, constructed in the 19th century by Wertheimer, 33 New Bond Street, London The lid inset with a panel depicting a phoenix emerging from flames, one end with butterflies, the opposing end with a parrot, the front and back panels decorated with lapis and coloured stones, the corners cast with lion masks. 36 cms wide; 23 cms deep; 19 cms high. Illustrated on back cover Note: The firm of Wertheimer exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London 1851 and two caskets by the firm were illustrated in the Art Journal Catalogue and described “the engraved work on these objects is of the most elaborate and delicate description; they are adorned with malachite and precious stones and are, in every way, worthy of finding a home in the most sumptuous boudoir.”
